Description

The exhibition "Nematerik" by Sofya Gavrilova is the result of a study of the territory of the Chukotka region, the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug. Residents of the region, located at the maximum distance from the capital (the flight Moscow - Anadyr - the longest in the world flight within the same country), call the central Russia "mainland", although geographically they are on the same continent as the rest of the country. This cultural and geographical gap underscores the absence of any infrastructural, social or cultural ties with the center, against the backdrop of the remaining traces of the development of the region in the Soviet era and attempts to create an infrastructure in our time. Chukotka is one of the regions of Russia where traces of the clash of civilizations are visible at every step, and it is not always clear which way of life and which culture dominates, and geography and climatic conditions should be taken seriously.
